Foods Questions answers the everyday questions that come up in the kitchen. Can I freeze this? How long will it keep in the fridge? Is it safe to reheat? We give you the answer first, in plain language, then explain the details.
What we cover
Mostly food storage and food safety: freezing, refrigerating, reheating, marinating, baking and drying. These are small decisions, but getting them wrong can mean wasted food or an upset stomach.
How we check our answers
- Official guidance comes first. Storage times, temperatures and safety advice are checked against government food-safety agencies, mainly the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and UK government guidance. Where it helps, we also use university extension services and manufacturers’ own instructions.
- We link our sources. Every answer lists the official pages it’s based on, so you can check them yourself.
- We say when advice differs. Some guidance varies between countries. For example, the UK advises eating leftover rice within a day, while US guidance on leftovers in general allows 3 to 4 days. When that happens, we tell you, and we point out the safer option.
- We keep answers up to date. We review our articles and update them when official guidance changes.
Found a mistake?
We’d like to know. If something looks wrong or out of date, please tell us through our contact page, and include the page link. We’ll check it against the official guidance and correct it.
A note on food safety
Our articles are general information, not medical advice. If you’re pregnant, caring for a young child or an older person, or have a weakened immune system, food-safety rules matter even more, and some foods (like raw sprouts or raw fish) are best avoided. When in doubt, throw it out.
How the site is funded
Foods Questions is free to read. It’s supported by ads and by affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This never changes our answers.
